Saptarishi Tila

Lila-sthana · Near Dhruva Ghat, Mathura, UP 281001

A mound in the south of old Mathura, a short walk from Dhruva Ghat, where the seven great sages — Atri, Marichi, Kratu, Angira, Gautama, Vasishtha and Pulastya — are said to reside and worship Krishna; a small temple of the Saptarishis stands on it. The mound is also an archaeological site: in 1869 it yielded the Mathura Lion Capital, a Saka-period capital with Kharosthi inscriptions, now in the British Museum.
