Badrinath Temple

The shrine of Badrinarayan on the right bank of the Alaknanda, one of the Char Dham and among the 108 Divya Desams. The one-metre black shaligram deity sits in meditation beneath a badri tree, flanked by Nara-Narayana, Uddhava, Kubera and Narada; tradition holds that Adi Shankara recovered it from Narad Kund. Worship is led by the Rawal, a Namboodiri brahmin from Kerala. The doors open in late April or May and close for winter in November, when an akhanda lamp is left burning.
