Bhuteshwar Mahadev

Temple · Shiva · Bhuteshwar Road, Mathura, UP 281001

The guardian Shiva of Mathura's western side, a short walk from the Janmabhoomi and counted the city's oldest Shiva shrine; tradition links him with Shatrughna, who settled Mathura after slaying Lavanasura. The same compound holds the Uma (Katyayani) Shaktipitha, one of the 51 seats of the goddess, and the cave shrine of Patala Devi, whom Kamsa is said to have worshipped. Pilgrims usually come here on the way to Potra Kund and the birthplace.
