Here, the story goes, Nanda Maharaja's party camped on pilgrimage when a python seized Nanda at night, and Krishna's touch freed it as the Vidyadhara Sudarshana; the goddess is honoured as the kuladevi of Nanda's family. The present temple is credited to the Marathas and was renovated in 1907; on Dussehra the Rama-Lakshmana players worship here before the Ravana-vadh.
