Adi Varaha Temple

Temple · Varaha · 1148 Manik Chowk, behind Dwarkadhish Temple, Mathura, UP 281001

Two small shrines of Lord Varaha in Manik Chowk, in the lanes behind the Dwarkadhish temple. The reddish Adi (Lal) Varaha is held to be the image Kapila Muni fashioned and gave to Indra, which Ravana later carried to Lanka and Rama brought back; Shatrughna is said to have installed it in Mathura after slaying Lavanasura. The neighbouring temple keeps the white Shveta Varaha, whose form is a boar's face on a human body.
