The main ghat of Gokul on the Yamuna and a place of great importance to the Vallabha (Pushtimarg) sampradaya: here Vallabhacharya is said to have had darshan of Yamuna-devi and began giving initiation. The town grew up around the seat of his son Vitthalnath and the Gokul goswamis, whose havelis — Gokulnath, Navanitapriya, Madhavray, Dvarkanath and others — fill the lanes above the river. For Gaudiya pilgrims, Nanda Maharaja's original Gokul is Mahavan, a few kilometres to the east.
