Dirgha Vishnu Temple

Temple · Vishnu · Ghiya Mandi Road, Chowk Bazar, Mathura, UP 281001

A temple of Vishnu in his tall (dirgha) four-armed form with conch, disc, club and lotus, near Bharatpur Gate on Ghiya Mandi Road in old Mathura. Braj tradition says Krishna showed this towering form to reassure the cowherd boys before facing Kamsa, and credits the first shrine to Vajranabha, His great-grandson; the present building is attributed to Raja Patnimal of Banaras, who rebuilt many temples of the city.
