Madhuvan (Madhu Kund)

One of the twelve forests of Braj, today the village of Maholi south-west of Mathura. It takes its name from the demon Madhu, slain here by Vishnu, who is honoured in this forest as Madhava; in the Treta-yuga story Shatrughna killed Madhu's son Lavanasura here and founded the city of Mathura, and the village keeps a Shatrughna temple and a cave called Lavanasura's. Pilgrims bathe in Madhu (Krishna) Kund and climb Dhruva Tila on the village's eastern side.
