Markandeya Sarovar

A walled laterite tank north-west of the main temple, one of Puri's five tirthas along with Sweta Ganga, Indradyumna, Rohini Kunda and the sea. Tradition joins a bath here with darshan of Markandeshvara Shiva on the bank, where the sage Markandeya is said to have worshipped. Jagannath's festival deity Madanamohana is brought to these waters for the Kaliya-dalana pastime. Stone ghats line the southern side.
