The first and greatest of the 108 Divya Desams, on an island between the Kaveri and the Kollidam: Vishnu reclining on the serpent Adisesha within seven concentric walls, the outer ones a living town. Ramanujacharya lived and taught here and his body rests in a shrine inside; in Margazhi the Vaikuntha Ekadasi festival opens the northern "gate of heaven".
